- Luca Signorelli's masterpiece, The Last Judgment, served as an inspiration for Michelangelo when creating the Sistine Chapel.

The Chapel of St Brizio inside Orvieto’s Duomo is an authentic masterpiece by Luca Signorelli, who worked on it between 1499 and 1504.
In 1396, Tommaso di Micheluccio from Orvieto left a legacy in his will to fund the construction of a chapel dedicated to the Assumption. This chapel was completed in 1444. Today, it is famous as the Chapel of San Brizio, named after the Madonna di San Brizio altarpiece, which was transferred here in 1622.
On 14 June 1447, the Opera del Duomo signed a contract with Fra Angelico to fresco the chapel based on the Universal Judgment theme. Fra Angelico only managed to paint Christ the Judge sitting on a throne of clouds and the spandrel with the Prophets before leaving for Rome, called by the pope to work on the Sistine Chapel.
On 5 April 1499, the Fabbrica reached an agreement with Luca Signorelli to continue Fra Angelico's work. On 27 April 1500, after completing the vault's decoration, the artist signed another agreement to paint the entire chapel.
Fra Angelico, who began the work, had placed Heaven on the vault: the saints, arranged in different ranks, surround Jesus, the glorious judge. On the walls below, Luca Signorelli will express his genius, presenting his masterpiece: the scenes of the preaching of the Antichrist, the end of the world, and the Last Judgment.
