The underground chambers

An 800 sq.m tunnel under the Duomo’s transept and the chapels offers a realistic glimpse into the ancient storage room and the Fabbrica construction site.

This space was restored in the late 19th century to obtain storage rooms for maintenance and restorations. It houses the tools and utensils from the centuries-old construction site, materials and equipment still used for maintenance, and leftover artefacts, together with testimonies of this extraordinary historical, artistic, and anthropological heritage.

Nowadays, it is often used as an exhibition space.
